The Lone Ranger

2022 Ford Ranger Lariat FX4 W/Splash package
Factory Claim 270 RWHP / 300 WTQ, Guestimate now 366 RWHP / 402 WTQ

  • AFE BladeRunner Intercooler Hot and Cold Side Tubes; Black
    • This has to be the single best bolt-on power increase I have performed, especially for $405. AFE advertises this as a 30% increase in horse power AND torque. If I take that at face value that means the Ranger, which Ford advertises as being 270 RWHP / 300 WTQ, has been increased to 351 RWHP / 390 WTQ. Now if that is true, which when I drive feels VERY true, that is an impressive amount of power out of a 2.3L Turbo 4Cyl. These intercooler pipes increased the minimum airflow diameter to 3″ from the 1.5″ factory pipe (the t-fitting for the blow-off valve and an interconnector on the outflow side are both the narrowest points in the factory pipes), so a ton more unrestricted airflow.
  • Magnum FLOW Pro 5R Oiled Replacement Air Filter and AFE Magnum Force Cold Air Intake Scoop
    • Ok, laugh if you want but this was the same bang for the buck as a CAI. All the CAI’s (Cold Air Intakes) on the market only advertised 5-7 RWHP/WTQ gains which is the same as the Magnum FLOW Pro filter claims. The Ranger, like many vehicles now, already employees a remote airbox located in the grill area. So I decided for a $84 lifetime filter and a $67 large mouth air scoop (yes, it is silly and expensive for a piece of plastic, I’m a dork) I was getting my money’s worth vs. a $450+ CAI that got me the same thing. No noticeable power increase, so we will chalk this one up to a warm-blanket install, makes me feel like I added power
  • J&L 3.0 Oil Separator
    • I wanted to maximize my turbo engine’s performance and longevity with a high-efficiency oil separator by keeping oil vapors out of my intake. By capturing oily “blow-by” vapors before they coat your intake valves and intercooler, this essential upgrade maintains peak octane levels, ensures smoother airflow, and protects the turbocharger from premature wear.
  • Pro Traxx 4-Inch Oval Side Step Bars
    • These are really sharp and well made. My previous truck had bars with plastic caps at each end that eventually feel out and were lost. I like these as the ends are welded caps making these bars super solid with nothing but the mounting holes for water to get in. They do catch a lot of snow in winter, have to kick blocks of slush out, but otherwise provide a great step to get into what is a reasonably tall factory off-road suspension. Besides I am getting old and getting into this truck would be difficult otherwise.
  • Husky Mud Guards; Front and Rear
    • Due to the aforementioned snow that I deal with in the winter having these is a must. I like the Husky as they are a much better price than Weathertech and let’s face it, do you really want to spend a $160 on plastic shields that will get hammered from road debris. At $89 these were a great price, super easy to install.
  • UnderCover Swing Case Storage System; Driver Side
    • AMAZING! if all you need is a place to carry your bungie cords or ratchet straps then this is the thing for you. The 2019-2023 Range has a tiny little storage compartment under the rear seat and it is hard plastic. This means you have to lift the rear seat whenever you want to access, not good if you are carrying anything in the back seat. Also anything like bungie hooks or the ratchet mechanism is going to rattle like hell in the hard plastic bowl they give you. This tools box swings out, has a built in lock, and can be locked onto it’s hinge to prevent theft. It also does not reduce your ability to carry things in your bed like a traditional bed toolbox does. The Ranger already has a short bed, only 5′, so carrying plywood and 2×4’s is already a challenge.
  • Raxiom SpeedForm Series Throttle Controller
    • Another amazing little gadget. This truck is my first turbo charged vehicle and turbo-lag is real. I always understood the concept but wow if you’re an impatient person (Me, me, me) then this is something you notice. Couple that with Ford’s unresponsive throttle-by-wire system and you are counting the milliseconds until you actually go (yes, I am that bad). This little guy gets rid of the throttle issue spectacularly. I mean for $60 my truck truly feels sporty in power response. As the video on the product page will tell you, there is NO power increase but the speed at which the power is delivered is wildly sped up. You have setting 1, 2, 3, Eco, and Factory, then with settings 1,2,3 you have micro adjustments so if you want to get super nerdy you can dial this thing in to your EXACT throttle response. I love this thing so much I have put on all my builds.
  • Ford Performance Sport Dual Exhaust System by Borla with Black Chrome Tips; Side Exit
    • The 2019-2022 Ford Ranger is nearly silent! It has a turbo, I want to hear something! Well this is a great solution, and its from BORLA not actually Ford. I have had years of experience with Borla exhausts and they are my favorite. They are not loud and rambunctious (well the ATAK is but I avoid those, I’m old) but they are very high quality. Have never had any rust or fitment issues with a Borla kit. This is a Cat-back system that splits into 2 tips out of the muffler. I will admit I didn’t get the sound I wanted but it was also my first time putting an exhaust on a 4 Cyl, I think my expectations were Mustang and I got high end Civic. That being said I did feel a bit more pull after installs. It claims 15 RWHP / 12 WTQ so MORE POWER and NOISE!
  • EGR Sports Bar
    • I am a child of the late 70’s/Early 80’s, so shows and movies like Smokey & the Bandit and Fall Guy were a big part of my vehicle influence as show bars were all the range back then. Back then they were called roll-bars, a misnomer as unless it was a welded in piece, almost none were, but at least they went all the way to the bed floor. Now a days they only mount to the bed rail and are pure show bars. but still look cool. A lot out there look tactical, not really the style I wanted and then I found this one. EGR made this bar for about 2 years, so I got lucky. It is a very classic looking round show bar with the classic bends and supports. It has two mounting points on top, and four under the supports to add lights or other accessories. Wiring it into the dummy brake light was a bit of a challenge to fish the wires back into the cab and up to the light. At the end of the days I love it and am ready to fight bad guys!
  • KC Hilites 6″ Apollo Pro Halogen Pair Pack System
    • Well, I got the show bar, of course I am getting KC Hilites! Again, let’s not forgot I’m a dork so I got these just for looks as I am not a hardcore off-roader. They are handy going through deer country at night to spot a crazy buck running into my path. While I might be a dork I am not an idiot, I bought the halogen lights for ~$160 vs $550 for LED, I didn’t want to look THAT cool. Again fishing the wiring was the tough part. Also there is a lot of metal structure behind the plastic in the under-dash areas so finding a spot to cut a hole and mount the switch. My look is completed now
